Put down that turkey burger, non-practicing vegetarian. It could send you to the hospital.

The Centers for Disease Control announced late Monday that there have been at least 76 illnesses and one death spanning 26 states, all stemming from turkey meat tainted with salmonella.
As reported by the Associated Press:
The illnesses date back to March, and the CDC said Monday that cultures of ground turkey from four retail locations between March 7 and June 27 showed salmonella contamination. The agency said preliminary information showed that three of the samples have been linked to the same production establishment but did not name the retailers or the manufacturer.
So let's get this straight. The CDC has known since March, didn't bother to say a word about the outbreak until August, and still refuses to name the company peddling the bacteria-laden meat?
While we understand why the USDA would want to take its time to verify the contamination before sending America into a frenzy, waiting until you have one verified death and dozens more hospitalizations seems heavily weighted in favor of big corporations rather than the families that have been griling up these poisoned patties this summer (even now, the USDA has yet to issue a recall).
So what's an informed consumer to do? According to food safety advocate Bill Marler, an attorney who specializes in representing the victims of these kinds of food outbreaks, we have only one recourse.
"Consumers have no idea what to do except not eat ground turkey," he said.
